Nagpur: February’s maximum temperature — 38.6 degree Celsius — equalled the highest recorded in February in the past decade. While this year it came on February 28, in 2017, it was recorded on February 22.
According to Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Monday was officially the onset of summer season. In the first week of March, the maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 37-38 degree Celsius. Nights might also get hotter as minimum temperatures will be around 17-19 degree Celsius.
Last year, the highest maximum temperature recorded in February was 33.5 degree Celsius. Data accessed by TOI from the RMC, Nagpur, reveals that till date the hottest day ever in the month was February 24, 2006, when the city saw a maximum temperature of 39.2 degree Celsius. The lowest ever minimum temperature was 5 degree Celsius and was recorded on February 12, 1950.
As per the met department, the mean minimum mercury levels in the month of February gradually increases from 10 degree Celsius to 18 degree Celsius by the end of the month. “There are rare occasions when the minimum temperatures drop below 10 degree Celsius,” official records state, adding that the mean maximum temperature shows a similar rise from 25 to 34 degree Celsius.
While the highest total monthly rainfall of 157 millimetres was in 1942, the heaviest fall in 24 hours was 51.6mm recorded on February 25, 1942. This year, the rainfall that city received in the month was comparatively quite low.
As per the met department, the mean total monthly rainfall was 18.2mm with about 1.4 rainy days. This year, the wettest day in the month was February 18, when the city received 1.9mm rains. Also, 0.2 and 0.3mm rainfall was recorded on February 17 and 19 respectively.
