Govt bans 59 Chinese apps on security concerns, including TikTok
by Careerex | Jun 30, 2020 | News
New Delhi: The government has banned 59 applications, including the popular China-based small video sharing service, TikTok, scanning app CamScanner and Mi Video by smartphone maker, Xiaomi, citing it has found these apps to be engaging in activities “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India”. The government also said these applications threaten defence of the country, security of the state and public order.
The decision to ban such a large number of apps comes at a time when relations between India and China have turned extremely bitter and amid growing anti-China sentiments since the violent standoff of 15 June between the two countries, which killed 20 Indian soldiers, including an Army colonel.
TikTok has over 200 million users in India and sees the country as one of its most important markets after China. In China, the app operates on a different name, and is called Douyin.
“There have been raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians. It has been noted recently that such concerns also pose a threat to sovereignty and security of our country,” according to a statement by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The IT ministry said it has received several complaints from various sources on misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms that steal and “surreptitiously” transmit users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers located outside the country.
“The decision to ban these apps This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace,” the ministry said.
“The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” the ministry said.
TikTok, which is the biggest name on the government’s list, was recently found accessing user data on Apple’s iPhones. The app accessed the phone’s clipboard, which holds text a user copies from elsewhere, and can be used by apps to glean more insights on a user. A new feature on Apple’s iOS 14 brought the issue to light and TikTok said, in a statement, that it would stop doing so. Over 50 other apps, including some from reputed news outlets have also been found to have similar features due to iOS 14.
Further, Mi Video and Mi Community are apps run by Xiaomi, which is the top smartphone seller in the country. Xiaomi bundles these apps on its smartphones. While Mi Video is meant to be a video aggregation platform, Mi Community Xiaomi users interact with each other and also ask questions about the company’s products.
Another app falling in the MeitY’s list is CamScanner, which is a popular solution for scanning documents in mobile phones. The app had been banned from Google’s Play Store in the second half of 2019 after researchers from cybersecurity firm, Kaspersky, found malware embedded in it. Google allowed the app back on its Store after changes were made to its code.

Indian video apps boom less than 24 hour after govt bans Chinese apps
by Careerex | Jun 30, 2020 | Technology
It seems Indian short video users have already started exploring other platforms after the government banned apps like TikTok, Helo and Vigo Video. The three Bytedance-owned apps have approximately 300 million users between them, and these users have started looking for other avenues to satisfy their needs.
According to Mayank Bhangadia, co-founder of video-sharing platform Roposo, the app has seen as many as 10 million downloads in the past 12 hours. The app’s total download counts stood at 65 million before the ban and has edged closer to 100 million now, with an average of 6 lakh new users joining every hour.
Another homegrown app, Chingari, claimed that it has crossed a total of 3.5 million lifetime downloads and is seeing 80,000 new downloads per hour right now. According to Sumit Ghosh, co-founder and chief product officer of Chingari, users are watching 221,000 videos every 30 minutes on the platform.
Roposo and Chingari are better known players in the video space. While the former has been growing for a while, the latter had gone viral recently. The two platforms aren’t the only ones that have seen such unreal surges after the ban on Chinese apps though. A lesser known app, called Trell, claims it has seen a million new installs since the ban last night too.
Trell’s Google Play page though says it has 1 million plus downloads right now, meaning the app will be getting installs from other sources too. It is listed on Samsung’s Galaxy Store and Xiaomi’s Mi Store as well, though the company didn’t share a breakup of where its downloads were coming from at the time of writing.
Similarly, an app called Bolo Indya, which also lets users create short videos saw over 100,000 new downloads in the last 12 hours. The app gets downloads from the native app stores on Oppo and Vivo smartphones alongside Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
The ban has left many TikTok users seeking new platforms for their content. Popular TikTok influencers Prem Vats and Noor Afshan have also switched to Roposo since last night. They had followings of 9.5 million and 9 million, respectively, when they were on TikTok. According to Varun Saxena, founder of Bolo Indya, a majority of users switching from TikTok to Bolo are from the Edutok segment of the Chinese platform.
Another common element amongt these apps is that they are all made in India, and they aren’t shying away from promoting aspects right now either. “We welcome all the TikTok and Chinese Apps content creators with open arms to come and engage on Trell, which is a 100% Indian app,” said Pulkit Agarwal, co-founder of Trell in a statement.

Snap Inc eyes influencers in India with AR-ready Spectacles 3 glasses
by Careerex | Jun 30, 2020 | News
In a fresh bid to engage with India creator community, Snap Inc is bringing its AR (augmented reality) based glasses Spectacles 3 to India. It will be available through Flipkart.com at ₹29,999 from July 4 onwards. The previous generation Spectacles 2 (original), which costs ₹14,999, will also be available on the same day. The key difference between Spectacles 3 and its Spectacles 2 (original) is that the former can capture 3d photos and videos, while the latter cannot.
Spectacles 3 is not meant for every Snapchat user. It is aimed at professional influencers and creators who want to add more spice to their posts and don’t mind spending a few thousands on a gadget that can make it happen.
The Spectacles 3 comes with two depth sensors, which allows it to capture 3D photos and videos. It can record up to 60 second long videos. After recording, users can import clips from the glasses to Memories in Snapchat app smartphone. Here they can apply special AR objects or effects such as flying bird or floating balloons designed to take advantage of the 3D environment captured in the image or video.
After applying the effects, users can post them on Snapchat and other social media platforms too. This makes sense considering the limited but growing presence of Snapchat in India. According to Statista, India is the second biggest market with 28 million users after US which has 102 million users.
By making it available to all influencers, Snapchat only stands to gain new creators who want to try out new tools to liven up their social media posts. The only limitation as of now is the limited number of filters that can take advantage of content captured via Spectacles. Considering the price, it is unlikely the glasses will sell like hotcakes, however, the few who will buy will ensure the platform has enough India centric AR content aimed at Indian audiences.
Snap Inc has been betting heavily on AR content and has thousands of AR filters called lenses. Early this month, Snap Inc launched Lens Web Builder, a web-based AR Lens ad production tool, allowing creators and marketers to build compelling AR Lenses quickly on a web browser.
AR has become a USP for Snapchat and differentiates it from other social networks. The company has been trying to get Indian creators and users on board by offering more India centric content. An AR based landmarker lens for Gateway of India was added to Snapchat in collaboration with Spotify during Diwali in 2019. It allowed users to access unique AR experiences and effects by pointing the phone’s camera on the monument and capture them together. Taj Mahal in Agra and Gateway of India in Mumbai are the two Indian landmarker locations on Snapchat.
