Nagpur: Students appearing for Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) exam on Tuesday claim they were sent on a wild-goose chase for a centre, after their original one was sealed by NMC as a containment zone, only to learn later that the exam had been cancelled.
Nagpur University officials said civic officials informed them pretty late that exams cannot be held and that’s why students could not be intimated in advance.
Anupama Ingle, one of the students, said, “Our original exam centre was Ambedkar College (Deekshabhoomi). But because some teachers and students were found Covid-19 positive there, it was declared prohibited area. Today, just hours before the exam was to start, only some of us got message that the centre has been shifted.”
Mamta Bhabade, another student, said, “Some students had come from outside Nagpur and were unaware of the building being sealed, so they had already reached Ambedkar College. It was shocking for them to know that they now have to catch an auto or cab and rush to a different centre.”
Student Pratik Shiriya said, “At Ambedkar College, somebody said we were asked to go to Law College in Civil Lines as our exam will now be held there. But after reaching there, we were in for yet another shock. Officials told us that the exam centre is actually Dhanwate National College (DNC) in Congress Nagar. So, again all of the students started rushing towards DNC.”
Sumit Thakur, another student, said, “Once we reached the DNC, the security guard told us that the paper has been postponed. Still we went inside and asked college officials, who initially said they were clueless about this.”
Student Kavita Vaidya said, “After a while, the officials pasted a notice outside saying that the B.Ed paper has been cancelled.”
Shashank Gattewar, who accompanied the students to meet the vice-chancellor, said he was surprised at the attitude of varsity officials. “We were made to sit in the waiting room all the while being assured that the VC will meet us soon. Later, we were told that the VC had left for lunch,” said Gattewar.
Prafulla Sabale, controller of examination for NU, said there were many things which were not in their control. “Today, civic officials contacted us saying we must not proceed with the exam because of the Covid-19 situation. Their directives came very late, leaving us with little time and that’s why students could not be informed in advance,” said Sabale.
About students being sent from one centre to the other, Sabale said, Law College campus was never a centre. “We never asked them to go to Law College. Yes, DNC had been made an alternative exam centre and we were even planning to arrange for some vehicles to ferry students. But then the call from NMC came and exam had to be cancelled,” said Sabale.
He added that only two papers are being impacted because of the Covid-19 situation. “We postponed today’s paper and then there was one on February 26,” said Sabale.
